We should strive to choose leaders as managers.
What is leadership? Can leadership be taught? Are leaders born not made? What are the qualities that define a leader? How do we define those qualities?
A good leader is an enabler. (Thanks Lea Bryden, I love that description!) A leader enables staff to be their best. A real leader finds ways to make others shine. It is not about making you look good, it is about making your staff look good. It is not about looking for credit for yourself or your program, it is about assigning credit to others at every opportunity. It is not about protecting turf, it is about being responsible for the public purse, creative sharing and use of resources. It is about thanking people for being there that day. And meaning it.
